Album Review

Childish Gambino’s “Awaken My Love” starts with the angelic notes from the opening of “Me and Your Mama” through the playful bliss of “California” and ends with a triumphant “Stand Tall.” “Awaken, My Love!” is a modern masterpiece and one of my go-to references for mixing because of all the dynamic range and crisp production. Gambino has channeled the spirit of artists past, such as Rick James, with songs like “Zombies” and Prince with the iconic “Redbone.”

It is easy to see that Gambino is a student of music and artists of the past. His vocal production on “Awaken, My Love!” keeps you guessing and entices the soul with a smooth and silky delivery. Blood, sweat, and tears went into the making of this instant classic.

Redbone

“Redbone” is a testament to the production style using old-school tactics such as call and response and actual instruments! Much of the production has taken away any of the digitized sounds of the “new” era and replaced them with warm and organic guitars, drum kits, bass, and wonderful keys.
